We first met Emily when Prickly Pear Paper first opened it's doors in 2017. She came in smiling and we were able to reminisce about the days in Southern California where Emily currently resides and where we had recently moved from. We have been following her amazing design work ever since and finally got around to having her make a card for us. Her playful use of text and simple line illustrations seemed like a perfect fit for some letterpressed cards. After running in to her in Palm Springs at the Mojave Flea, we decided to keep the desert theme going so Emily created these wonderful Desert Babe Birthday cards and soon to be printed Joshua Tree Pattern box sets. Keep a look out for those upcoming sets and make sure to give Emily a follow for your daily dose of fun typographic lyrics and whimsical narrative illustrations.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
My name is Emily and I'm a graphic designer and freelance creative living in Southern California. When I'm not designing, you can usually find me researching places to travel or catching up on my never-ending Hulu watch list.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DOING DESIGN AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT IT?
I randomly chose design as my degree when I went away to college in California, and it turns out I was good at it! God bless my parents for supporting me in choosing a talent based career that I had no experience in. However looking back, my favorite part of school was making any presentation or science fair board, so maybe that was a sign.
HOW DO DIFFERENT CREATIVE OUTLETS INSPIRE YOUR DESIGN?
I draw a lot of inspiration from being outside or listening to other people's stories. Everyone carries with them their own brand and feeling, and to me it's inspiring to take that in. I also love to visit any new place that carries its own type of design-- buildings, coffee shops, churches, bars-- it's like meeting the designers through that place.
A dream client would probably be someone like Birchbox -- with endless packaging opportunities and a really defined market.
I've been told I have horrible taste in music so I'm honestly not sure if I should even answer this. I love Oh Wonder, Anderson Paak, The Drums and LANY if I had to name a few.
The coolest place would probably be Granada in Spain! It's such a tiny city with winding roads and the absolute nicest people.
